Eric Taylforth We ' ve worked with LDF from the very beginning and we ' ve always looked after each other. It ' s rewarding to know the animals we take such great care of go to some of the best restaurants in the world, it makes me a very proud man. Millbeck Farm has a long and decorated history. It dates back to 1621 and was subsequently purchased by Beatrix Potter in 1936 specifically for the conservation of Herdwick Sheep. The Herdwicks were tended by Miss Potter ' s shepherd, Joseph Gregg, and his son Vic, for almost 50 years. Vic would ultimately become Eric ' s mentor, taking him under his wing in 1980 to teach him the traditional Herdwick farming methods that have been so successful for almost a thousand years. Eric believes it is the continuation of these long-standing and customary farming methods that is the biggest contributor to the standard of sheep he is able to produce. Herdwicks are the only breed of sheep able to thrive all year round on the fells of the Lake District.

Outside seating is available in the residents garden. Clean well behaved dogs are as welcome as their clean well behaved owners! The old oak panelled walls and floors give the house great character, however sound travels easily through the house, the house is neatly divided into the farm's own family home and the luxury self catering accommodation. Guests must realise that there may be some noise transfer between the two 'houses'. We do have free WIFI access available in parts of the house, mainly in the dining room, but be warned, it may be not as fast as you are used to. Check availability or book online

We'll be 2 families of 4 adults and 4 kids. we have done it once last year at a farm near Bassenthwaite lake which was fantastic, we would go back there at the drop of a hat but wondered if there were any other places people could suggest thanks for any help 26 posts 10 reviews 35 helpful votes 1. It's a very rural locations as the cottages used to be a farm and the surrounding land is still full of lambs, streams with fish etc and the lake is nearby. There are plenty of grounds (including a wood) to play in, and there are fishing nets in the laundry. I know you say its secluded, is there a village nearby with village pub?
A good days walking followed by a pint is also on my wish list 3. There was no pub in Grange the nearby tiny village, just two cafes, which I agree is a shame. We did walk to a pub at the end of Catbells but we made a 'proper' walk of it - although you could have gone along the lanes instead of over the fell. There are hotels on the other side of the valley which I think have public bars - but it's not the same! The self catering quarters have been exquisitely refurbished working with all the original features. The cosy lounge has an open fire and is the perfect place to spend a quiet relaxing evening, you can pass time the old fashioned way with traditional games. There is also a CD player with ipod dock and a TV with DVD player and (sky package included). The splendid dining room was furnished by Beatrix Potter herself and is still home to many original Beatrix Potter chattells. The kitchen is fully equipped and has fridge, freezer, microwave oven etc as well as all the cooking equipment and utensils you should need for your stay. You will get a starter pack of consumables like kitchen roll, cling film etc. There is an outdoor hot tub available at all times on a private decked area to the side of the house.
