D'Urville Island is an island in the Marlborough Sounds along the northern coast of the South Island. Named after French explorer, Jules Dumont d'Urville, the island has an area of approximately 150 square kilometres, is the eighth-largest island of New Zealand and has roughly 50 permanent residents. Its Māori name is Rangitoto Ki Te Tonga. The island is separated from the mainland by the dangerous French Pass, known to Māori as Te Aumiti. Here the water races through on each tide at up to eight knots creating whirlpools, eddies and currents, a truly awesome passage feared and respected by mariners. The road from Rai Valley to French Pass village was built in 1957. The drive is spectacular with visitors rating it the most scenic drive in the country (surpassing Milford and Queenstown). French Pass village on the mainland sits opposite D'Urville Island and is a quiet fishing, farming and tourist village with a safe swimming beach, picnic areas and DOC campsite. From here, it is possible to be picked up by water taxi to the D'Urville Island Wilderness Resort located in the beautiful Catherine Cove.

Our unit was spacious with most of what you might need (apart from a microwave). However, the meals that Kathy and Craig provided meant that there was little need for that. Bed was really comfy and the shower superhot with plenty of pressure. Although there were only 8 of us guests, it was amazing how many points of contact we had. Visits from the weka occurred throughout the day and kept us entertained. One real highlight was looking from our bed straight out to the water... ahhhhhh! Well worth it as the views you get on the way are worth the cost alone. Landing at the resort along side the cafe meant an easy walk to a glass of wine and an unhurried lunch on the deck while looking out over the bay. There were a number of long term holiday makers there and chatting with many of them revealed the place was enjoyed by all. Thee relatively new owners are welcoming and working hard to make everyone's stay enjoyable. The food is fresh and well prepared and the beer is cold. There are about 15 longer terms cabins/houses/ batches that can be rented so no need to do a quick dash; but if that is all the time you have then a quick dash is worth it. Travel by your own boat is always an option too.
