Troutbeck The picturesque village of Troutbeck, which is between Windermere and Ambleside, is made up of the hamlets Town End, Longmire Yeat, High Green and Townhead. These are strung out along a line of springs along the lower slopes of Wansfell. A good example of this is Townhead, which was built in 1626 by George Browne. The National Trust, who are responsible for it's upkeep and preservation since 1947, open this house on summer afternoons for public viewing. Townend is well worth the visit as it has remained exactly as it would have been lived in many years ago. This house has no electricity, many of the walls are covered with carved wood panelling and all the original wooden furniture, which the Browne family collected over the years, are on display.

Alternatively, from Troutbeck continue up to the Kirkstone Pass Inn, a pub so isolated it generates its own electricity using wind turbines. Breakfast (a solid 7/10 eggs Benedict) is far better, but, overall, this is steadfastly ordinary food. A new head chef has started since my visit – so, fingers crossed, things may have improved. In many ways, the pub and its 10 en suite bedrooms cannot escape their corporate origins – Robinsons has 280 tenanted and managed pubs across Cheshire, Derbyshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and north Wales. From the officious wifi log-in page (it stops just short of asking for a DNA sample), to the 10am checkout (it's £15 to leave later), the Queen's Head lacks the intimate charm of smaller, owner-operated properties. In the bedrooms, the toiletries are from France, bottled water from Wales and biscuits from Cafe Bronte catering packs. However, the Queen's Head has many redeeming features. Troutbeck, a hamlet that commands awesome views of Garburn pass, is a peach of a location. A few questionable designer flourishes aside (incongruously modish lighting, OTT wallpapers), the refurb has been executed with sensitivity and the atmosphere is welcoming.
Lake District Towns and Villages Troutbeck in the Lake District National Park Troutbeck valley runs northwards from Windermere, the road gradually climbing to Kirkstone Pass, then onto Ullswater. The village itself is on the west side of the valley, strung out along a narrow, undulating minor road. There is no real focus as the cluster of hamets were originally formed around a series of small wells, though there is a post office which sells tea and ice cream. Troutbeck has been designated a conservation area since it still contains a number of buildings dating from the 16th to the 19th century that still retain original features. One of the oldest houses is Townend, originally built by George Browne in 1626 and lived in by his descendents until 1943. it is now a National Trust property. In addition to it's exterior charm with it's whitewashed walls, stone mullioned windows and old round chimneys, the inside has been restored to its former glory, with original furniture and fine oak panelling.
