Central Edgartown has lots of residential neighborhoods that are interconnected with bike paths that provide easy, car-free access into town. Chilmark is a bit more rural and quiet with less development and more private beaches. Vineyard Haven has slightly more modest homes by island standards with a mix of Federal, Greek revival and Cape Cod-style houses. The downtown Historic District is a hip area to live and is also near the island's only year-round ferry port. Aquinnah is another rural area uptown, while West Tisbury is home to middle-class neighborhoods and the upper area's only grocery store. Transportation in Martha's Vineyard The Martha's Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA) is the only year-round, island-wide transportation system on the island that runs seven days a week except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The bus services numerous stops including Downtown Edgartown and Vineyard Haven Road. There are also taxis and car rentals available; in the summer it is advised to reserve a rental car since taxis are first-come first-serve.
