Every month VisitEngland™ publishes the England Occupancy Survey (EOS), which uses a measure of bedroom occupancy across the serviced accommodation sector – from large hotels to small B&Bs and farmhouses – and across the country. In the latest figures for 2018, room occupancy in England has increased +1% in January (65%) whilst February remained unchanged at 74%, when compared to 2017. This change in room occupancy was led by a slight increase in room supply (1. 9% in January and 1. 5% in February), compared to an increase of 2. 5% in demand for January 2018 and a decrease of -0. 7% in February. RevPar – which measures the total room revenue divided by the total number of available rooms – also increased by 1% in both the first and second months of the year, at £54. 35 and £63. 89 respectively, when compared to 2017. Location wise, city and large town room occupancy remained relatively unchanged in January and February; while small town occupancy increased slightly in January. Seaside room occupancy saw the biggest increase in both January and February 2018.

While the software remained PC-based, the EOS system used a SQL Server database hosted on a ReZolve data server. From 2007, the England Occupancy Survey has been operated using a new web-based application. This was developed and hosted by ReZolve. It provides additional functionality for active recruitment of new respondents and a separate reporting portal. Delivery of personal results, and benchmarks was also enhanced to provide greater benefits to participating establishments. RIBOS ReZolve Internet-Based Occupancy Software has been developed on the core functionality of the original Survey IT software but as a wholly web-based solution. Largely based on the success of the EOS software, RIBOS provides a comprehensive, easy to use, platform for accommodation occupancy survey which is now being rolled out to existing users. Every month the England Occupancy Survey (EOS) measures bedroom and bed-space occupancy across the serviced accommodation sector – from large hotels to small B&Bs and farmhouses. As well as delivering occupancy levels for the country as a whole, results are also available by region, destination type and establishment size. How the survey is conducted: Data is collected from a panel of participating accommodation businesses who submit data each month. In the UK each of the national tourist boards undertakes its own serviced accommodation occupancy survey. The results from these surveys are combined to deliver the UK Occupancy Survey (UKOS). In June 2017 a change was made to the occupancy data. The data is now collected using a syndicated panel of more than 3, 000 hotels and other accommodation businesses provided by hotel market data and benchmarking company - STR. To allow a meaningful comparison of year on year trends, VisitEngland and STR have included historical data from STR's own panel in the reports from June 2017 onwards.
The software was based on an Access 97 database using a PC application developed using Microsoft Visual Basic 6 and Crystal Reports. A key element of the design of the software was to incorporate a flexible system of analysis categories. These allow each region to analyse data using custom categories such as geographical funding areas. [/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version="3. 106″ background_layout="light"] Web-based Surveys An early web-based survey was introduced in 2001 to allow for data collection for some respondents via the Internet. Synchronisation of data between the web and the regional database was an important feature of this application too. England Occupancy Survey In 2004, a consortium of regional tourist boards won the contract to run the England Occupancy Survey. A customised version of Survey IT was used successfully to administer this for three years. This also included the synchronisation of data between the regional system and the EOS database using XML data files over HTTP.
In contrast, countryside locations saw a slight decrease for room occupancy in January and February. Occupancy by region saw the largest shift coming from the East Midlands, West Midlands and South West with a 2% increase in January, and Yorkshire & Humberside with a -3% decrease in February 2018. All other regions in England remained relatively unchanged. Looking at room occupancy rates by establishment size all categories remained relatively unchanged, except for the 26-50 rooms category which increased in January 2018 by 2% to 62%; as well as the 1-25 rooms category which decrease by -1% (60% room occupancy) and -3% (68%) in the first two months of the year. Given the likelihood that smaller sized properties will not be part of a hotel chain, one can generalize these results as fitting with the independent accommodation sector.
