Puerto Escondido, on the Oaxacan coast, is the third Mexican beach town we've lived in. We loved Playa del Carmen and San Pancho and were tempted to return, but we decided to explore a new part of the coast. Puerto Escondido is a relaxed, medium sized beach town with a population of around 45, 000 known for its excellent surfing. It has grown in size over the years and is popular with expats and surfers, but has managed to avoid huge development and all-inclusive resorts. Puerto Escondido is very spread out with a series of beaches stretched along the coastline. The surf beach Zicatela is the longest, and there are a number of smaller beaches closer to the centre of town. The beaches are beautiful and we enjoyed our stay but it wasn't our favourite Mexican beach town. Playa del Carmen was more walkable and had better infrastructure like faster WiFi and a cinema, and San Pancho is much smaller with a magical charm. Comparisons really affect your experience and the more we travel the more spoilt we become, so I'm sure we would have loved it if we hadn't been comparing it to other towns.
There are often discounted tickets for students, and students have the opportunity to volunteer and see concerts for free. A choir made up from the student body performs the grace at the black tie dinners, and there is ample opportunity to get involved in the chapel and church services if wanted. Students get the chance to sit on various committees within the college to represent their fellow students. The general atmosphere at St Stephen's House is very friendly and as a student there, you will notice that College finds it important that students' opinions are listened to and considered in all aspects of college life. There are regular general Common Room meetings in which all students can have their say about their Common Room and what they would like to see happen (and get a free drink! ). Welfare With its small close-knit community, the College has a very good support network and it really is safe to say that no one gets lost in the system. Many of the staff live on site, and eat and socialise regularly with the students, which enables them to get to know them on an individual basis and provide support where needed.
