National Parks and Conservation There are two main reserves situated in the Eastern and Western parts, the Mweru Wantipa and the Lusenga Plain National Parks. Nchelenge District Administration Officer Gift Hajongola has told ZNBC News that the fish stocks on the lake have drastically reduced in the lake due to illegal fishing activities. Mr. Hajongola has explained that the fishermen in the area had camped at the fish breeding centers and at the same time using illegal fishing gear. He said the commandos have been deployed to prevent such illegalities. And Masiliso Phiri, Fisheries Research Officer for the Mweru-Luapula Fishery has explained tat the use of mosquito nets has also contributed to the low fish stocks on the lake. Mrs. Phiri says currently, fish per unit each night has reduced to 0. 5 kg from the 12kg per unit per night that used to be caught in the 1990′ has nonetheless noted that the fisheries deportment is using the current fish ban period to restock the lake.
